Overview

The Test of Handwriting Skills – Revised (THS-R; Milone, 2007) is a norm-referenced, clinician-administered assessment of manuscript and cursive handwriting used with students ages 6 years to 18 years, 11 months. The THS-R takes approximately 25 minutes to administer and score, though it is an untimed assessment; it may be individually or group administered. It consists of eight tasks that measure how a student writes upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, words, and sentences. These items are written in one of the following ways: from memory, by copying, or from dictation. The test also measures speed of writing, letter reversal, and case substitutions. Compared to its predecessor, the THS-R has extended norms through age 18 (manuscript and cursive), nationally stratified norms, abbreviated administration procedures, a simplified scoring procedure, and handwriting exemplars that reflect current styles including D’Nealian, Handwriting Without Tears, Universal, and Zaner-Bloser. In addition, the manual includes information about the use of the THS-R for progress monitoring. Computer-based scoring is available using a training CD-ROM that comes with the kit.
