Overview

The Student-Directed Functional Assessment Interview (SDFAI; O’Neill et al., 1997) is a semi-structured interview conducted with the student in an effort to understand the student’s perspective on the circumstances related to a specific behavior of concern. The interview takes 20 to 40 minutes and is conducted by an adult who has a positive relationship with the student. There are four sections of the SDFAI that permit development of summary statements regarding behaviors of concern, events that seem to trigger the behaviors (proximal antecedents), events and places associated with the behaviors (distal antecedents), and maintaining consequences of the behavior. This assessment can be found in Functional assessment of programming developed for problem behavior: A practical handbook - 3rd Edition (O’Neill et al., 2014).
