A Math "SUM"mary: Best Practices for Teaching Mathematics to Students with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities

Mathematics instruction is an area where there often is great uncertainty on how to best teach students with autism and intellectual disabilities. This workshop will prepare teachers with strategies on how to build foundational early numeracy skills and mathematical problem-solving skills in a progressive manner while accessing grade-aligned content. Each strategy will be given a brief overview, a demonstration, followed by hands-on practice time.

Participants will be able to:

  • identify the benefits of teaching mathematics to students with low incidence disabilities
  • demonstrate applications of evidence-based practices for teaching mathematics and will leave with an EBP Toolkit
  • demonstrate an understanding of how to teach problem-solving to students with low incidence disabilities
  • apply early numeracy and problem-solving skills to access grade-aligned standards in mathematics

Applied Behavior Analysis in the Classroom: Powerful Principles for Everyday Practice

In this engaging workshop, educational professionals will learn powerful principles and practices from the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA). Dr. Pennington will walk participants through foundational principles in ABA using educational anecdotes, humor, and research examples. He will then show how these principles can be applied as effective teaching and intervention procedures to improve outcomes for students. Dr. Pennington’s experience is in working with students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities, but the workshop content can be applied to all populations.

Social-Emotional Engagement: The Fuel for Learning in the Classroom - ESC Region 14 or online

The What

Research into the nueroscience of interpersonal engagement suggests that social-emotional enagement is a "fuel" for learning. Supportive learning environments foster the engagement of all students including those with autism. When school communities gain knowledge of a social and emotional scope and sequence of skills and how to facilitate investment, independence and initiation within classroom lessons, we create a positive school climate that is focused on the success of every student. The Social-Emotional Engagement – Knowledge and Skills (SEE-KS) program will be shared as a framework for fostering social emotional engagement, presenting information in multiple ways, and promoting student participation and relationships. Creating a classroom setting and lesson plans with these elements creates a more desirable and predictable environment for our students to learn. Participants will be able to take away strategies for measuring student engagement, designing instruction to enhance engagement, and building capacity through teacher-to-teacher mentorship.

As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to…

  • Identify at least two implications of social neuroscience that impact how we deliver services in an effective manner.
  • Identify three domains of essential instructional strategies that promote active student engagement and positive outcomes.
  • Apply a checklist of instructional strategies for fostering the emotional “hook,” providing information in different ways, and fostering student expression within academic activities.
