Cognitive Assessment System - Second Edition

The Cognitive Assessment System – Second Edition (CAS2; Naglieri & Das, 2014) measures cognitive processing abilities based on the cognitive/neuropsychological theory known as PASS (Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive) for children 4 years through 18 years, 11 months.

Overview

The Cognitive Assessment System – Second Edition (CAS2; Naglieri, Das, & Goldstein, 2014) is an individually-administered, norm-referenced instrument that measures cognitive processing abilities based on the PASS (Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive) cognitive/neuropsychological theory. The CAS2 is used for individuals 5 years to 18 years, 11 months old. Planning tasks require the test taker to develop an approach to solving a task in an efficient and effective manner. Attention tasks require the individual to selectively attend to one and ignore the other aspect of a two-dimensional stimulus. Simultaneous tasks require the individual to interrelate the component parts of a particular item to arrive at the correct answer. Finally, successive tasks require the individual to either reproduce a particular sequence of events or answer questions that require correct interpretation of the linearity of events.

There are 8 subtests in the Core Battery and 12 in the Extended Battery. The CAS2 may be used for diagnosis, eligibility, determination of discrepancies, reevaluation, and instructional planning. An optional Spanish supplements package is available. Additionally, scoring can be completed with the purchase of the CAS2 Online Scoring and Reporting System. The CAS2:BF (Brief Form) is a cognitive processing screener for use with persons 4 to 18 years. It takes 30-40 minutes to complete; it was designed to be used during initial testing to provide a measure of overall ability and for examination of variability in PASS scores to determine possible implications for intervention. This is purchased separately from the CAS2 kit.
