Test of Early Mathematics Ability – Third Edition (TEMA-3)

The Test of Early Mathematics Ability – Third Edition (TEMA-3; Ginsburg & Baroody, 2003) is designed to measure the informal and formal mathematics abilities of children ages 3 to 8-11.

Overview

The test allows users to identify children with learning difficulties, as well as those who are likely to develop problems in mathematics. It also yields useful information on the child’s strengths and weaknesses, suggests instructional practices based on a child’s weakness profile, and documents a child’s progress. TEMA-3 provides the user with a measure of children’s mathematics attainment, measuring the following domains in two forms of 72 items each: numbering skills, number-comparison facility, numeral literacy, mastery of number facts, calculation skills, and understanding of concepts. A book of remedial techniques (Assessment Probes and Instructional Activities) is provided, offering instructional activities to address weaknesses identified through the assessment.
